Democrat Pete Ashdown
vs.
Republican Orrin Hatch (Incumbent)


CBS News Race Outlook: Utah is overwhelmingly Republican and voted for President Bush by nearly a 3-to-1 margin in the 2004 election. Ashdown was severely underfunded. There was some talk among Utah Republicans about challenging Hatch – as conservative as he is, he is not as conservative as the state GOP would like. They especially do not like that he is friends with Ted Kennedy. That challenge never came to fruition, and Hatch was expected to coast to re-election.
