CBS NEWS PROJECTS BOB CASEYWINNER

Democrat Bob Casey, Jr.
vs.
Republican Rick Santorum (Incumbent)

CBS News Race Outlook: Democrats tried to point out that Santorum is a conservative and that he voted with President Bush 98 percent of the time. High-profile Democrats like Hillary Rodham Clinton and Madeleine Albright campaigned and headlined fundraisers for Casey; and high-profile Republicans like President Bush, Karl Rove, and Rudy Giuliani did the same for Santorum. Casey criticized Santorum’s involvement with the K Street Project in which it is alleged the GOP pressured D.C. lobbying firms to hire Republicans to work on Capitol Hill. Casey endured complaints for not returning money from an Abramoff associate, according to The Hill. On immigration, Santorum wanted thousands of new border guards and high-tech surveillance; Casey said he lined up with John McCain – that there should be tougher penalties on those who hire illegal immigrants and no amnesty. Santorum ran ads saying that as treasurer Casey missed work 41.5 percent of the time to campaign for Senate. A voiceover for the ad says, "If you missed that much work, would you keep your job?"
