Montana CBS NEWS PROJECTS JON TESTERWINNER Democrat Jon Tester vs. Republican Conrad Burns (Incumbent) CBS News Race Outlook: Burns had trouble because of his connections to disgraced lobbyist Jack Abramoff, but he gave back all of the money he received from Abramoff. Tester won his primary in a landslide, contrary to polls prior to the election. The momentum helped Tester and hurt Burns. Tester spent most of his money on his primary campaign and needed the help of national Democrats. On immigration, Burns and Tester agreed there should be no amnesty for illegal immigrants, but disagreed about a wall along the Mexico border – Burns favored one; Tester didnot. On Iraq, Tester believes there needs to be an exit strategy; Burns said the U.S. needs to stay as long as necessary. They disagreed on the Patriot Act and wiretapping – taking their party’s positions.
