CBS NEWS PROJECTS SEN. DIANE FEINSTEINWINNER
Democrat Diane Feinstein (Incumbent) vs. Republican Dick Mountjoy
CBS News Race Outlook: The Sacramento Bee wrote Feinstein, "can expect a walk in the park next year," and her reelection prospects "now appear to be closer to a romp than a race." Feinstein won 47 percent to 45 percent over Michael Huffington in 1994 even though she was outspent by $15 million. Mountjoy is a hard-line conservative – not typically the kind of Republican that could have broad appeal in California, particularly with Feinstein’s moderate record. For example, Mountjoy blames highway overcrowding on illegal immigrants. "California has at least 3 million people here illegally and how many are driving?" Mountjoy told The Sacramento Bee. "We could enforce current laws and the freeways would be less crowded."
