CBS NEWS PROJECTS SEN. JON KYLWINNER
Democrat Jim Pederson vs. Republican Jon Kyl (Incumbent)
CBS News Race Outlook: Arizona has been a traditionally Republican state that voted for President Bush in 2004 by a wider margin than in 2000. In 1996, Bill Clinton became the first Democrat to carry the state since Harry Truman in 1948. Kyl won overwhelmingly in 2000, but he won with just 54 percent in his first race in 1994. Kyl is seen as a hard-liner on immigration which is a major issue in this border state. Pederson wanted to appear independent, but Kyl ran TV ads, showing that Pederson gave money to Ted Kennedy, Hillary Clinton, John Kerry and Howard Dean with a voice over that says, "Jim Pederson: Liberal Agenda, Zero Experience."
