Incumbent Republican Jeb Bush was term-limited. Crist faced charges he is too socially liberal during the primary campaign. Crist is pro-abortion rights and for civil unions. Davis calls himself a New Democrat, supporting the Defense of Marriage Act, opposing the penny-per-pound sugar tax on the Florida ballot, supporting the balanced budget amendment and the 1996 welfare act.
