California CBS NEWS PROJECTS ARNOLD SCHWARZENEGGERWINNER Democrat Phil Angelide vs. Republican Arnold Schwarzenegger (Incumbent) Schwarzenegger went on an ad blitz, spending more than $15 million on ads. After Schwarzenegger’s ballot initiatives were defeated in 2005 and his popularity took a nosedive, it looked like it would be hard for him to rebound. But his approval rating climbed back above 50 percent. Some said Angelides didn’t have the personality to compete with the charismatic Schwarzenegger. The Angelides camp attempted to highlight Schwarzenegger’s support of the Iraq War and his support of President Bush’s reelection, to no avail.
