CBS NEWS PROJECTS JIM DOYLEWINNER
Democrat Jim Doyle (Incumbent) vs. Republican Mark Green
Wisconsin was a presidential battleground in 2004 and 2000 (Both Kerry and Gore won by narrow margins here) and this race was expected to be a close one. Doyle was criticized for not reducing property taxes – one of his campaign promises. Even though Green is serving his fifth term in Congress, he remained relatively unknown to many voters outside the Green Bay-based district he represents. There was a measure on the ballot that would establish a constitutional ban on same-sex marriage. If enacted, it would also outlaw civil unions. Doyle opposesed the ban saying "Wisconsin already outlaws gay marriage. This amendment is unnecessary, and was only intended to divide people." Green supported the measure.
