CBS NEWS PROJECTS JIM DOUGLASWINNER

Democrat Scudder Parker
vs.
Republican Jim Douglas (Incumbent)

Incumbent Douglas was favored to win reelection. While the state leans Democratic – Kerry won here with 59 percent of the vote – a challenger has not defeated a sitting governor in Vermont in 44 years. Douglas is the type of Republican Vermonters like – a moderate one. Parker criticized Douglas for not having a clear vision for that state. A gubernatorial candidate must receive at least 50 percent of the vote to win office; otherwise the state legislature selects the governor.
