Sanford was favored here to retain his seat, despite a somewhat rocky relationship with the GOP-controlled state legislature. Republican State Senator Jake Knotts had threatened to file as an Independent candidate, which would have helped the Democrat Moore, but after collecting 13,000 signatures (10,000 are required to appear on the ballot), in mid-June, he decided not to run.
