CBS NEWS PROJECTS JOHN LYNCHWINNER

Democrat John Lynch (Incumbent)
vs.
Republican Jim Coburn

The very popular Lynch was heavily favored to retain his seat. A July University of New Hampshire poll showed him with an overwhelming 67 percent to 12 percent advantage over state Rep. Coburn and a 79 percent job approval rating. In addition, Lynch had a considerable fundraising advantage over Coburn. On his campaign Web site Coburn called for lower taxes and a smaller and more efficient state government. In New Hampshire, a governor’s term is only two years.
