Incumbent Republican Kenny Guinn was term-limited. The state GOP suffered from a bit of in-fighting. Guinn is not fond of Gibbons personally, and he sought a candidate who would defeat Gibbons in the primary but Gibbons prevailed. Gibbons has said the difference between him and Democrat Dina Titus is clear: "I’m a Reagan conservative and she’s a Kennedy Democrat."
