Heineman was favored to win election here after assuming the office in 2005 when then-Governor Mike Johans was appointed U.S. Secretary of Agriculture. Heineman defeated popular longtime Nebraska coach and Congressman Tom Osborne in the Republican primary by 6 percentage points.
