Democrat Deval Patrick vs. Republican Kerry Healey (Open seat)
Incumbent Republican Mitt Romney is not running for reelection and may run for president in 2008. In a state where both of its Senators and all 10 of its U.S. Representatives are Democrats, a Democrat has not won the Governor’s seat since Michael Dukakis in 1986. Patrick, an African-American, was endorsed by the Mass. Democratic Party in the primary, but he was considered the most liberal of the three Democrats running. Healey, a wealthy woman, was Romney’s running mate in 2002. Healey ran TV ads blasting Democrats in general for their "big-spending agenda."
