CBS NEWS PROJECTS JOHN BALDACCIWINNER
Democrat John Baldacci (Incumbent) vs. Republican Chandler Woodcock
Baldacci was the first Democrat to win election as Governor of Maine since 1986. Baldacci was thought vulnerable because of the state’s history of strong showings for Green Party and Independent candidates. In fact, Independent Angus King won election as Governor twice – in 1994 and 1998. Jonathan Carter, the 2002 Green candidate, received 9 percent of the vote. This year, the Green candidate is Pat LeMarche, the 2004 Green Party vice presidential candidate. Two Independent candidates were also on the ballot.
