I've just discovered Donna Leone. She writes absorbing mysteries, all set in modern-day Venice, and featuring the same inspector, a very complex character in a constant battle with his buffoon bosses as he tries to do his job.

Or, if you're not into mystery, how about "Praying for Gil Hodges: A Memoir of the 1955 World Series and One Family's Love for the Brooklyn Dodgers"? It's just out, written by some guy named Oliphant. Now Oliphant does happen to be my husband. But, of course, that in no way affects my objectivity! This book is fabulous!
