Sgt. George E. Buggs, 31, of Barnwell, S.C. was one of eight soldiers found dead during the rescue of Pfc. Jessica Lynch, who was being held captive.
Lynch's unit, the Fort Bliss, Texas-based 507th Maintenance Company was ambushed near Nasiriyah on March 23, 2003. The unit was on a supply mission.
"We hate it, but there ain't nothing we can do about it," Buggs' grandfather, George Buggs, 83, said Saturday after learning of his grandson's death. The retired truck driver and his wife had raised the soldier.
Buggs was based at Fort Stewart, but was traveling with the Fort Bliss-based 507th Maintenance Company because it needed an extra mechanic with his skills.
Buggs' 12-year-old son had been "worried about his dad not seeing him grow up," said his wife, Wanda Buggs. "It's not something you get over," she said.
Buggs was a soft-spoken young man when he and Wanda fell in love in high school. He joined the Army in 1992 and was considering making it a career. He loved the Army and "all the things that it could offer," his wife said.
