House Majority leader Tom DeLay, R-Texas, has come under a stream of accusations of unethical conduct. DeLay has strenuously denied any wrongdoing, and Republicans have insisted that the charges against him are partisan, the efforts of a minority desperate to regain power.

On Sept. 28, 2005, a Texas grand jury charged DeLay and two political associates with conspiracy in a campaign finance scheme, an indictment that could force him to step down as House majority leader.

Then, on Oct. 3, 2005, a Texas grand jury re-indicted DeLay on charges of conspiring to launder money and money laundering after the former majority leader attacked the Sept. 28 indictment on technical grounds.

The newer indictment contains two counts: conspiring to launder money and money laundering. The latter charge carries a penalty of up to life in prison.
