Federal law does not require any area to observe daylight-saving time, and a few parts of the U.S. have opted not to do so. They are Arizona, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, American Samoa, Guam and the Northern Mariana Islands.

In 2006, Indiana began observing daylight-saving time statewide for the first time in more than 30 years. The change, approved by lawmakers in 2005, made it the 48th state to observe daylight-saving time.

As you can imagine, this was pretty confusing, especially for the broadcasting industry, and for trains and buses. Because of the different local customs and laws, radio and TV stations and the transportation companies had to publish new schedules every time a state or town began or ended daylight-saving time.
