Elaine Chao was born in Taiwan and immigrated to the U.S. at the age of 8 with her family. She holds an undergraduate degree in economics from Mount Holyoke College and an M.B.A. from Harvard Business School. Chao was president and CEO of United Way of America and director of the Peace Corps. She also has served as deputy secretary of the U.S. Department of Transportation, chairwoman of the Federal Maritime Commission, and vice president of Bank America Capital Markets Group in San Francisco. She is married to U.S. Sen. Mitch McConnell, R-Ky.
