The U.S.-led coalition transferred sovereignty to an interim Iraqi government June 28, 2004, and a new government led by Prime Minister Iyad Allawi was sworn in. The new leadership oversees most day-to-day concerns, while the U.S.-led force remains in command of security. Preparations are also to be made for democratic elections, to be held no later than Jan. 31, 2005.
