A do not resuscitate order is specific only to your wishes concerning cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), which is used when your heart and lungs fail. Patients often choose to have a DNR order when they are battling terminal illnesses and do not wish to prolong their lives. You may obtain a DNR through a verbal agreement with your doctor or as a provision in an advance care directive. In emergency situations, first responders are required to perform lifesaving measures with urgency, and there is no time to discuss your wishes in detail. According to the Family Caregiver Alliance, a national non-profit organization, advance directives and similar documents do not apply in these situations. However there are "prehospital DNR" forms you may obtain from your doctor that do. It is important to keep this document in a highly visible location, such as above your bed, if you feel one is necessary.
