President Bush directed his White House staff to cooperate fully with the Justice Department investigation into the leak. "I don't know of anyone in my administration who has leaked," Mr. Bush said. "This investigation is a good thing."

At the time, national security adviser Condoleezza Rice and Secretary of State Colin Powell both said they were unaware of any White House involvement in the matter, and the White House denied that chief political strategist Karl Rove was involved in revealing Plame's identity. "There's been nothing, absolutely nothing, brought to our attention to suggest any White House involvement, and that includes the vice president's office as well," presidential spokesman Scott McClellan said.
