The White House sidestepped questions following a New York Times report on Oct. 25, 2005, about whether Vice President Cheney revealed a CIA officer's identity to an aide before it was leaked.
At the time, Press Secretary Scott McClellan said he would not have any comment on an "ongoing investigation."
The grand jury probing the leak handed down an indictment Oct. 28, 2005, charging I. Lewis "Scooter" Libby, on obstruction of justice, false statement and perjury charges.
A special prosecutor spent two years probing who blew the cover on operative Valerie Plame, whose husband was a top administration critic on Iraq.
The New York Times reported that the prosecutor had notes showing Libby first heard of Plame from Cheney -- not from journalists as he told the grand jury.
When asked if the president retains confidence in Cheney, McClellan told reporters the vice president is doing a "great job."
