Facing the threat of jail time, Time magazine reporter Matthew Cooper agreed July 6, 2005, to testify about his confidential source in stories he did about the leak. Cooper chose to cooperate with the federal prosecutor's investigation because his source gave him specific authority to discuss their conversation.
It was revealed the following week that presidential adviser Karl Rove spoke to Cooper about Wilson, a week before his wife was identified in Robert Novak's column. According to a July 11, 2003, e-mail by Cooper obtained by Newsweek magazine, Rove told Cooper that the woman "apparently works" for the CIA and that she had authorized her husband's trip to Africa.
On July 13, 2005, Cooper testified before the grand jury investigating the leak. His appearance lasted 2 1/2 hours.
