The White House's retraction of the uranium claim in the president's State of the Union address is the only time it has admitted a flaw in its case for war with Iraq. It came after former Ambassador Joseph C. Wilson undermined the Iraq-Africa connection, saying he was sent to investigate the claim a year earlier and found no credible evidence. A short time later, the identity of Wilson's wife as a CIA operative was leaked to several journalists. The White House denied being the source of the leak, and the Justice Department opened a full-blown investigation.

On Oct. 28, 2005, I. Lewis "Scooter" Libby resigned as Vice President Dick Cheney's top adviser after being indicted on obstruction of justice, false statement and perjury charges. He was convicted on four of five charges on March 6, 2007.
