Richard M. Nixon was elected in 1968 and 1972 to the U.S. presidency. The 37th president became the first to resign when he stepped down in 1974.
He lived for another 20 years, writing numerous books about foreign affairs as well as his life and political career before dying in 1994 at age 81.
