Retired in 2001, and named interim executive editor on June 5, 2003. Lelyveld, 66, spent 14 years in prominent roles at the Times: seven years as executive editor, four years as managing editor, and three years as foreign editor. As an international correspondent, he covered the Congo, India, Pakistan, South Africa and Hong Kong. He won a 1986 Pulitzer for non-fiction in 1986 for "Move Your Shadow," a book about racial turmoil in South Africa.
