Saddam's former chief of staff and Republican Guard commander, Al-Rawi was the head of the paramilitary force, Fedayeen Saddam. A staunch Saddam loyalist, he was awarded 27 medals during the 1980-88 war with Iran, in which he was severely wounded in the head while leading a counterattack against an Iranian offensive.
