Five prisoners, led by Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, confessed mastermind of the Sept. 11 attacks, appeared before a U.S. military judge at the Guantanamo Bay naval base in Cuba on charges of plotting the attacks on New York and Washington.
Each is charged with murder, conspiracy, attacking civilians, terrorism, destruction of property and other crimes. Some also face hijacking charges. The Defense Department is seeking the death penalty if they are convicted.
Their arraignment in June of 2008 began the highest-profile test yet of the military's tribunal system at Guantanamo Bay, which faces an uncertain future.
