The Senate Judiciary Committee on Wednesday, June 13, 2007, issued a subpoena for Taylor, the former White House political director, to testify.
The subpoena came a day after newly-released Justice Department documents revealed that Taylor was closely involved in the firings of eight federal prosecutors. In a Feb. 16 e-mail, Taylor described a U.S. attorney in Arkansas who was fired last year as "lazy" — "which is why we got rid of him in the first place," according to the documents.
Taylor appeared before the Senate Judiciary Committee July 11, 2007, but said she will comply with President Bush's orders not to discuss the firings, unless a court orders her to comply with Congress instead.
Democrats insist that there are plenty of things about the firings that Taylor can discuss -- and is compelled to reveal under a subpoena -- that are not covered by Bush's executive privilege claim.
