On May 22, 2007, British prosecutors accused former KGB agent Andrei Lugovoi of murder in the radioactive poisoning of fellow ex-operative Alexander Litvinenko and sought his extradition from Russia. The Russian prosecutor-general's office said it will not turn over Lugovoi to British authorities.

  • Met Litvinenko in a London hotel on Nov. 1 and has undergone treatment for radiation contamination.

  • A former major in the Federal Security Service of the Russian Federation (FSB, he was engaged in protection of high-ranking officials in the 1990s, including acting prime minister Egor Gaydar, the chief of presidential administration Sergey Filatov, Minister for Foreign Affairs Andrey Kozyrev. Lugovoi joined the group of bodyguards of the secretary of Russia’s Security Council, Boris Berezovsky, accompanied him at least once during the negotiations with Chechen insurgents. After retirement Lugovoi headed a security service of a TV station headed by Berezovsky

  • Lugovoi co-owns a group of companies producing wine and soft drinks based on old Russian formula, and several agencies, providing bodyguard services for wealthy clients.
