  • On October 30, 2006 Hunter announced that he was forming an exploratory committee for a presidential run in 2008.

  • Hunter dropped out of college and joined the Army; he was awarded a Bronze Star for his service in Vietnam.

  • He attended Western State University Law School on the G.I. Bill

  • Hunter is an advocate for a strong military and U.S. border security.

  • He became chairman of the Armed Services Committee in 2003 – a post he will lose in the new Democratic-controlled Congress.

  • Hunter cosponsored legislation that would build 700 miles of fencing along the country’s border with Mexico. It was signed by President Bush in October 2006.

  • Hunter's son, Duncan Duane Hunter, a First Lieutenant in the United States Marine Corps, has served two tours in Iraq.

  • Since 1994, Hunter has accepted $40,700 in campaign donations from ADCS, Inc. and its founder, Brent Wilkes -- the same contractor at the center of the Duke Cunningham scandal.
