  • Hagel is a Vietnam veteran who saved his brother’s life when the armed personnel carrier they were riding in hit a landmine. He was awarded the Purple Heart – the first of two he would receive.

  • Hagel is a founder of Vanguard Cellular Systems Inc, one of the largest independent cellular providers in the United States.

  • While Hagel voted for the Iraq War resolution in 2002, he questioned whether the White House had considered the long-term impact of a conflict, saying "We could be getting into something we don't understand." He continues to be critical of the Bush Administration’s strategy in Iraq.

  • Hagel’s voting record is mostly conservative. He voted for the Bush tax cuts of 2001, but against the Medicare prescription drug bill in 2003.

  • Despite supporting his friend Sen. John McCain in the 2000 presidential campaign, Hagel was rumored to be on George W. Bush’s short list for Vice President.
