Hagel is a Vietnam veteran who saved his brother’s life when the armed personnel carrier they were riding in hit a landmine. He was awarded the Purple Heart – the first of two he would receive.
Hagel is a founder of Vanguard Cellular Systems Inc, one of the largest independent cellular providers in the United States.
While Hagel voted for the Iraq War resolution in 2002, he questioned whether the White House had considered the long-term impact of a conflict, saying "We could be getting into something we don't understand." He continues to be critical of the Bush Administration’s strategy in Iraq.
Hagel’s voting record is mostly conservative. He voted for the Bush tax cuts of 2001, but against the Medicare prescription drug bill in 2003.
Despite supporting his friend Sen. John McCain in the 2000 presidential campaign, Hagel was rumored to be on George W. Bush’s short list for Vice President.
