  • Giuliani was elected Mayor of New York City in November 1993, and was reelected in 1997. He lost his first bid for Mayor to David Dinkins in 1989 by the closest margin in city history.

  • In April 1999, Giuliani launched an exploratory committee seeking the Republican nomination for U.S. Senate in New York. He was expected to face Democrat First lady Hillary Rodham Clinton.

  • In May 2000, Giuliani announced he was dropping his bid because he had prostate cancer. Congressman Rick Lazio became the GOP candidate and he lost to Clinton that November.

  • Giuliani is most known to the rest of the country for his handling of the September 11, 2001 attacks on the World Trade Center. In 2001, Time Magazine named Giuliani Person of the Year.
