Son of an Army officer.
A history professor, Gingrich first ran for Congress in 1974 and again in 1976, losing both times; he was elected in 1978.
In 1987, Gingrich pursued ethics charges against then-House Speaker Jim Wright, D-Texas, that stemmed from a book deal. In 1989, Wright resigned his Speaker post and later from Congress.
Recognized as the chief architect of the Republican Contract with America that helped the Republicans capture control of the House of Representatives in 1994 -- the first GOP majority in Congress in 40 years.
Gingrich served as the Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives from 1995 to 1999. Gingrich won his House seat in 1998, but just days after the elections, he announced he was stepping down as Speaker. He later resigned from Congress.
Gingrich is currently the CEO of The Gingrich Group, a communications and consulting firm based in Atlanta.
