  • Gilmore was elected governor of Virginia in 1997. One of his major campaign pledges was to cut the property tax on automobiles.

  • Gilmore served as the Chairman of the Republican National Committee from 2001 to 2002.

  • From 1999 to 2003, Gilmore chaired the Congressional Advisory Panel to Assess Domestic Response Capabilities for Terrorism Involving Weapons of Mass Destruction, a panel created by Congress charged with assessing federal, state, and local governments’ capability to respond to a terrorist attack. It was nicknamed the "Gilmore Commission."

  • Gilmore entered the race saying the 2008 Republican field lacks a true conservative.
