  • For a good part of his life, Frist’s focus was medicine. He did not vote until he was 36 years old.

  • When elected, he became the first practicing physician to serve in the Senate since Royal Copeland of New York died in June 1938.

  • Became Senator Majority Leader in December 2002 after then-Majority Leader Trent Lott stepped down.
