For a good part of his life, Frist’s focus was medicine. He did not vote until he was 36 years old.
When elected, he became the first practicing physician to serve in the Senate since Royal Copeland of New York died in June 1938.
Became Senator Majority Leader in December 2002 after then-Majority Leader Trent Lott stepped down.
