  • As Governor, Thompson is most noted for his work on welfare reform. In 1996 he created Wisconsin Works (W-2), the state’s welfare-to-work program.

  • During Thompson's tenure as Secretary of Health and Human Services, Congress approved the Medicare prescription drug benefit.

  • Republicans urged Thompson to challenge Wisconsin’s incumbent Democratic Senator Herb Kohl in 2006 but he declined.

  • Thompson was Wisconsin’s longest serving governor.

  • He is an avid motorcyclist.
