As Governor, Thompson is most noted for his work on welfare reform. In 1996 he created Wisconsin Works (W-2), the state’s welfare-to-work program.
During Thompson's tenure as Secretary of Health and Human Services, Congress approved the Medicare prescription drug benefit.
Republicans urged Thompson to challenge Wisconsin’s incumbent Democratic Senator Herb Kohl in 2006 but he declined.
Thompson was Wisconsin’s longest serving governor.
He is an avid motorcyclist.
