Thompson was elected to the U.S. Senate from Tennessee in 1994 to fill the last two years of Al Gore's term after he resigned to become Vice President.
From 1973-1974, Thompson served as co-chief counsel to the Senate Watergate Committee in its investigation of the Watergate scandal.
While in the Senate, Thompson was an advocate for term limits and campaign finance reform.
Thompson is also an actor who has starred in such movies as "The Hunt for Red October" and "In the Line of Fire." He currently stars in the television series "Law & Order."
Thompson endorsed John McCain for President in 2000.
Thompson’s adult daughter Elizabeth died in January 2002. He decided not to seek re-election to the Senate shortly thereafter.
