  • Paul was first elected to the House of Representatives in 1976 in Texas’ 22nd district in a special election. He lost the general election six months later but was elected again in 1978. Paul ran for the Senate in 1984 and lost the Republican primary to Phil Gramm.

  • The House seat Paul gave up in order to run for Senate was won by Tom DeLay.

  • In 1988, Paul ran for president as a Libertarian and finished third with 432,000 votes.

  • In 1996, Paul was again elected to Congress; this time from Texas’ 14th district.

  • Paul was an early advocate for term limits and holds a limited government philosophy. He frequently votes against proposals for government funding. Some of his Republican colleagues call him “Dr. No.”

  • Paul voted against the Iraq War Resolution in 2002.

  • As a medical doctor, Paul specialized in obstetrics/gynecology.
