  • Feingold was elected to the Senate in 1992, upsetting the Republican Incumbent Sen. Robert Kasten. Kasten outspent Feingold by $3 million, but lost votes when he started campaigning on abortion. In 1998, Feingold was again outspent and again managed to pull off a win with 51 percent of the vote.

  • In 1982, at 29, Feingold won a State Senate seat by defeating an 83-year-old veteran state senator by 31 votes.

  • Feingold co-sponsored the "McCain-Feingold" campaign finance reform act. He has said that the campaign finance system is "legalized bribery and influence-peddling."

  • In 1997, he called for an independent counsel to investigate Clinton’s fundraising scandals and in 1999, he was one of three Democratic Senators to vote against air strikes in Kosovo. Feingold also voted against the Patriot Act.

  • Feingold has a mostly liberal record on cultural and foreign issues, and somewhat more moderate on economic issues.

  • In the second grade, Feingold cast the only vote in his class for John F. Kennedy and said he wanted to be president some day.
