  • In 1995, his autobiography was published, Dreams from My Father: A Story of Race and Inheritance.

  • Obama says that "Barack" means "blessed" in Swahili.

  • He was the first African American president of the Harvard Law Review.

  • At Harvard Law he was a classmate of Bush 2004 campaign manager and Republican National Chairman Ken Mehlman.

  • He ran unsuccessfully for Congress in 2000 challenging 1st District Democratic incumbent Bobby Rush in the primary. Obama was attacked for missing a vote on a gun control measure. Rush was endorsed by Bill Clinton and won 61 percent-30 percent.

  • Obama became more known to a national audience when he delivered the keynote speech at the 2004 Democratic National Convention in Boston.
