The Dakota, New York City
On Dec. 8, 1980, former Beatle John Lennon was shot and killed by outside the Dakota apartment building in New York. The shooter, Mark David Chapman, was sentenced to 20 years-to life in prison. He was most recently denied parole in August 2012. Lennon's wife, Yoko Ono, still has an apartment in the building on Central Park.
