As a rap fan and a comedy writer, Rappers Looking Like Magicians was a match made in heaven to Tumblr creator Dave Segal. "After getting back to Los Angeles from a weekend trip to Vegas, I saw a billboard promoting a new rap album and was struck by just how ridiculously similar it was to the billboards promoting magic shows I'd been seeing all over Vegas. Once I got to thinking about it, I realized there were a lot of similarities between the two groups: a flare for ridiculous fashions, a desire to surround themselves with smoke and scantily clad women, an outsized confidence for what they actually do, a fascination with the mysterious, and a predilection for over-the-top poses."
