Noted on its eBay listing, this General Electric dishwasher ad is from 1952. "This was a time when womens work was defined in the household," says Tracy Tuten, associate professor of marketing at East Carolina University. "The wife who saw this ad might've thought, 'other husbands are doing the dishes? Mine isn't!'"

It was probably effective, Tuten says. "It doesn't insult either the wife or the husband but provides a solution for both to get out of doing the dishes."
