Film actor Kirk Douglas in one of his first movies, in an undated picture. Born in Amsterdam, New York, he made his Broadway debut in 1941, served in the U.S. Navy and embarked on a screen career in 1946. His films include "Champion" (1949), "The Bad and the Beautiful" (1952), "Lust for Life" (1956) for which he was nominated for an Academy Award, and "Spartacus" (1960). Douglas also worked as a director.
