2012 National Film Registry

The Library of Congress has announced its 25 annual additions to the National Film Registry. Not simply a "best of" list, the Registry is a compendium of motion pictures that captures the breadth of American culture, history and social fabric, with the aim of preserving these fragile films for future generations.

This year's entries range from Hollywood blockbusters, romantic comedies and technological advances, to religious allegories, home movies and sporting events, dating from 1897 to the 1990s - an eclectic and mesmerizing list that celebrates the art of cinema.
