With the Super Bowl here, plenty of folks are planning their game-day menus. But according to public health advocate Dr. Charles Platkin, distinguished lecturer at CUNY School of Public Health at Hunter College in New York City, people may not realize what exactly they're putting into their bodies.
Platkin, who is also editor of DietDetective.com, thinks one problem with nutritional advice is that most people don't have a reference point for what a calorie actually is, and what it would take to burn off a particular food. That's why he has reviewed data and conducted his own analyses to come up with Super Bowl-themed ways to burn off foods commonly eaten during game. For example, to burn off six wings with a little ranch dip, a person would need to do "the wave" 6,480 times, as Platkin determined from watching tape and charting his findings.
Would you run more than 140 football fields to burn off a handful of chips and dip? From Platkin, here are common foods you might find at your Super Bowl party and wacky ways you can burn off the calories...
