Though smallpox was eradicated more than 60 years ago, the dread disease has been a hot topic in recent weeks. That's because of the continuing debate over whether the U.S. and Russia should hold on to their stockpiles of the smallpox virus. The international community wants the stockpiles destroyed. But at an international conference in May 2011, the U.S. argued that its stockpiles would be needed to create a vaccine if terrorists find a way to use the disease against us.
